There are objects that disappear when you place something on them, and there are objects that remain present. This plate is the latter. Wide, low, and composed with the quiet authority that Catalan ceramicist Carme Balada has made her signature, it asks to be placed on a table and looked at before it is used.

The surface — hand-worked stoneware with a glaze that breaks unevenly toward the rim — rewards closeness. The transition between glazed and unglazed clay is deliberate, never accidental. At 34 centimetres, it holds a composed sharing plate, a still life of seasonal fruit, or a single object placed at its centre with intention.
